This is the real JRR Tolkien!! A cool YouTube video of an interview with him in 1968. He tells us that he challenged himself to write a very long story, one that would hold the attention of the reader. He decided that it should be about a pilgrimage (journey) involving an object (in this case, the RING).
He listened to the request of his own children, and changed his style of writing. They asked that he not write about so much science. So, we have his epic, brilliant, series of the Hobbitt. This video shows where he developed some of his ideas.
