Christmas Donation of Library Books!

A huge thank you to the Iowa Department of Revenue for their donation of books to the Saydel libraries. Delivering the books were Patty (left) and Lisa (right).  Their donation included two copies of the newest very popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever. Merry Christmas to us!!

Using QR codes

Introducing QR Codes
There are bookmarks available on the library checkout desk that have four QR (quick response) codes for you to use. These are like a barcode that you scan, only these take you to the library websites described above the QR code on the bookmark. You can search for books, read this blog, go to the library wiki, or read instructions on how to search using Destiny OneSearch, which is the best research tool available to Saydel students!! (P.S. it makes your citations for you!)

To scan these codes you can use a smartphone by downloading a free app for reading QR codes, or you can download a QR reader onto your laptop. The directions for downloading to your laptop are:

How to use QRreader:
1: Make sure you have a working webcam (built in your laptop) and Adobe AIR installed.
2: Download and install QRreader. Look on the page for the download button. You must have Adobe Air installed first!
3: Get a scan-able QR code.
4: Hold up the QR code to your webcam. Make sure your webcam can see the entire code, and that your code is evenly lit.
5: If your webcam sees the code, the white brackets will turn red. Then you can open the settings to enable you to hear a *beep* sound once the code has been read properly. You can also set it to go directly to the website. Pretty cool!!

One Search is Up and Running!

I have finally added our local AEA databases into our library online catalog. Students may now search  safe and reliable databases for information, while they are searching for books during a research project. You may use the "basic search", enter your keyword or subject, then in the results lists, open the "one search" tab. There you will see databases to use. You will need to enter our AEA login and password (which I cannot post on the internet). OR, you use the "power search" and select the databases by checking them. Then enter your search term and away you go! Hope the Saydel students find this a fast way to do reliable searching!

Tolkien Interview

This is the real JRR Tolkien!! A cool YouTube video of an interview with him in 1968.  He tells us that he challenged himself to write a very long story, one that would hold the attention of the reader. He decided that it should be about a pilgrimage (journey) involving an object (in this case, the RING).
He listened to the request of his own children, and changed his style of writing. They asked that he not write about so much science. So, we have his epic, brilliant, series of the Hobbitt. This video shows where he developed some of his ideas.

What is dystopian fiction? It's opposite of utopia, which is a perfect future world!

  • Dystopian societies are undesirable or even horrifying.
  • Dystopian societies are usually futuristic and fictional.
  • Dystopian depictions can be regarded as warnings.
  • Dystopian fiction is both about today and tomorrow.
  • Dystopian fiction comments on our own society.

    ***Wikipedia as source***
Some of the best? (Older) War of the Worlds, The Giver, Brave New World, 1984, Farenheit 451, Planet of the Apes
(Newer) Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Matched (one of my favorite bks) Gone, Incarceron

What is steampunk?

funny
Steampunk is Victorian science fiction
or
"Steampunk" is the science-fiction of the Steam Age; the Industrial Revolution re-imagined with the advantage of modern hindsight. Drawing upon the wealth of historical technology and the scientific fantasies of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, steampunk seeks to reinvent modern wonders (such as the computer) as the people of that era might have envisioned them. Following in the footsteps of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, steampunk authors blend history, science and imagination into a world of wonder that might have been.

Summer Reading!

I have read 30 books to date (July 11). Most of them are books to be considered for the 2012-2013 Iowa Teen Award contest. I compose a booktalk and rate each book on a scale of 1-5. My results will be sent to the state chairman for compilation with other book reviewers. The booktalks will be posted on the library  Wiki. I love to read and share with my students!
